TURNING POINT, Yppenplatz, Vienna 2012

Created as part of the SOHO Festival in Ottakring 2012 as an installation in public space on the  Yppen Square in Vienna.

Material: acrylic, tapes. (With the support of 3M Austria and ambientart.at)

The festival SOHO in Ottakring 2012 invited artists to reflect on the topic of crisis under the theme "Uncertain Ground" realted to the social  impact of the financial crisis in 2008.  My contribution was the installation "Wendepunkt" (Turning Pint), carried out on Yppen Square / Brunnenmarkt as work in public space.

At the moment of the crisis, the fear of the unknown paralyzes us. It's not clear yet what the future brings and what will be lost for ever. A change is imminent, but the question is: how do we deal with the feeling of dissolution, of instability and insecurity? What do we hold on to, what do we let go of?
What interests me more than the feeling of helplessness and being at the mercy of  external forces is the self empowerment and bundled energy, strength and resilience that is created in such a moment and how it is transformed into an action.
This work shows a figure that grabs its own hair and throws it out on the surroundings like Spiderman's web, in order to wind around a free-standing column, which thus becomes a literal "turning point" for this figures circular movement.
