UN-CONSTRIANED, Diploma thesis, installation Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, 2011
Painting: pencil, acrylic on canvas, 200 x 150 cm, walls and floor: tapes, length variable. Photos: Th.Fr.
This installation was part of my diploma thesis at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna.
It shows the moment of departure from the known into the unknown, from the present to the future and the tension, fear and enthusiasm that arise in this situation. This work reflects my situation as an art student who frees herself from academic constraints while breaking into a new, rather unknown art world.
The painting shows an Icarus-like figure with three arms that tries to fly away and free itself from the red lines that hold it back, but that have also supported and nourished it in the past. This figure thus becomes the starting point from which the dynamic of the expansive installation spreads into the surrounding space - including the walls, ceiling and floor - and thus envelops the visitors. The trompe l'œil lines tilt the spatial axes and create a vertigo that gives the emotional tension an additional physical feeling of insecurity.
